The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award Announces Call for Entries
The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award 2012 have announced that they will be open for applications from 1 May - 1 November, 2012.
First launched in 2006, The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award is an annual fine arts competition which aims to encourage, recognize and promote emerging artists from the UAE and is especially popular amongst university students majoring in Art, Design and Multimedia.
“We are pleased to organize this competition for the seventh consecutive year,” said Muna Bin Kalli, Executive Director of Dubai Ladies Club. “With every new year, it is truly endearing to see the growth of this competition as well as the impact it has had on the UAE art scene. In addition to providing a valuable career building experience, The Sheikha Manal Young Artist Award challenges young emerging artists to create some of their most innovative and finest works. The excitement generated by simply entering this competition and ‘thinking outside the box’ leads to numerous new possibilities and to opening doors that may otherwise remain shut.”
She added, “The number of entries has grown with each edition. Last year saw an impressive number of submissions with more than 200 entries from 11 different nationalities, reflecting the continued interest in art within the community and the role of this initiative as the UAE’s most important award for young emerging artists. This year in our quest to attract the largest possible number of young artists and given the large number of applications we received in the past, we have increased the age limit of the applicants from 30 years to 35 years. We hope this step with encourage many more to take advantage of this contest which not only rewards the emerging artists but also encourages them with recognition and support .’’
The contest is open to all UAE residents, male and female, between the ages of 18 to 35 years. One major criterion for the award is that the artist should not have had an independent solo exhibition previously. The award grants the winning artists the exciting opportunity to exhibit their work in a solo showcasing and for the first time.
The competition is divided into three categories:
Fine Art Category - Acrylic, Oil, Water Colour, Pastel, Ink, Sculpture, Ceramics, Glass, Print Making, Etching, Mixed Media
Photography Category - Black & White / Coloured Photographs captured by the artist with slight digital modification and printed on flat surfaces including Canvas, Silk, Acrylic Sheets
