Artists-in-Residence Announces Selected Artists and Curator for 2013 Edition
The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), the Emirate’s dedicated Authority for culture, arts, and heritage has announced the selected Emirati and international artists and the curator-in-residence for the 2013 edition of the 'Artists-in-Residence Dubai (A.i.R Dubai) Programme', organised in partnership with the Delfina Foundation, Art Dubai, and Tashkeel.
Scheduled to be held from 7 January to 31 March, 2013, at Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the cultural nerve-centre of the city - A.i.R Dubai 2013 will feature Ammar Al Attar, Dina Danish, Ebtisam Abdul-Aziz, Joe Namy, Reem Falaknaz, and Yudi Noor. The six artists will work alongside Bérénice Saliou, the curator-in-residence.
The residency programme will culminate in an Open Studios exhibition, which will be held parallel to the SIKKA Art Fair in March 2013, where artists will open their studios for visitors to showcase their artworks or works-in-progress. The international artists are also commissioned to create site-specific works for Art Dubai Projects, the critically-acclaimed, non-commercial programme of new works and performances that explore the fabric and economy of an art fair.
A.i.R Dubai aims to support artists by providing a platform to develop their practice and create new work, while facilitating exchange between the artists, the local communities, and the broader cultural landscape. Furthermore, the curator-in-residence position gives an international practitioner interested in the Gulf the opportunity to write, research, and cultivate ideas for future projects that engage with the regional artistic sphere. The programme also aims to nurture and encourage intercultural dialogue through contemporary art.
Salem Belyouha, Projects & Events Director, Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, said: “The Artists-in-Residence programme is setting a milestone in the cultural and artistic landscape of Dubai, by offering infrastructural support and lending momentum to newer channels of creativity. The selected artists for the 2013 edition of the programme are representative of the city’s multiculturalism, while symbolising the city’s spirit of global collaboration.”
Multidisciplinary artist, curator, and writer, Ebtisam Abdul-Aziz incorporates her unique perspective on mathematics and the structures of systems to explore issues of identity and culture through installations, performance pieces, and works on paper. Her works also deal with everyday issues laden with psychological poignancies.
Born in Dubai, Ammar Al Attar has attended numerous photography courses and is a member of the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP), Photographic Society of America (PSA), and the Abu Dhabi International Photographic Society (ADIPS). Ammar’s work has been showcased across the UAE in key exhibitions including Emirati Expressions in 2011 and the Thessaloniki Museum in Greece.
Visual Communications graduate Reem Falaknaz currently works for the Dubai Media Incorporated group, allowing her to travel around the Emirates, where she collects and documents narratives from the city’s inhabitants. Through her work, Reem aims to translate the story of the city through sounds and visuals.
Recipient of an MFA from New York University, Joe Namy works with sampled sounds, documentary/music videos and photography to investigate aspects of identity, memory, power, and currents encoded in music. Indonesian-born and Berlin-based Yudi Noor explores the relational state of material as an abstract visualisation. Egyptian artist Dina Danish’s works combine conceptual arts preoccupation with language and structure, with an interest in humour, misunderstanding, mistranslation, and superstition.
The artists will work alongside Bérénice Saliou, the curator-in-residence, whose curatorial practices explore the ideas of border, territory, public space, dialogue, and negotiation. Bérénice holds an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths College and has curated exhibitions and projects in Morocco, Brussels, Spain, UK, Germany, and Paris.
A.i.R 2013 Dubai will coincide with Art Week, Dubai’s premier umbrella arts initiative, which includes Art Dubai, Design Days Dubai, and SIKKA Art Fair, Dubai Culture’s contemporary art fair.
