GPP Movie Night: War Photographer

Starts: Wed, 01 February 2012, 07:00 p.m.

Ends: Wed, 01 February 2012, 10:00 p.m.

Gulf Photo Plus will be showing the fantastic documentary film, 'War Photographer' that documents the work of James Nachtwey who is one of today's generations most prolific photojurnalists and documentary photographer who has covered countless wars. The film will be screened at The Pavilion on 30 January, 2012 at 7pm.

It would be a challenge to find a single war in the last 20 years that Nachtewy has not covered. His first foreign assignment was to cover civil strife in Northern Ireland.  in 1981 during the IRA hunger strike. Since then, Nachtwey has devoted himself to documenting wars, conflicts and critical social issues. He has worked on extensive photographic essays in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, Israel, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, the Philippines, South Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Rwanda, South Africa, Russia, Bosnia, Chechnya, Kosovo, Romania, Brazil and the United States.

Though one might assume him to be a hardened war-veteran. Nachtwey is instead a shy and soft spoken individual, without a doubt brave, and resilient considering he has likely seen more suffering and dying than anyone else of our time.

The Swiss author, director and producer Christian Frei followed Nachtwey for two years into the wars in Indonesia, Kosovo, Palestine, using special micro-cameras attached to Nachtwey’s camera. The resulting imagery offers the viewer a glimpse into the world through Nachtwey's eyes, searching for the decisive moment amidst dire circumstances.

Meet fellow photographers at 7pm, film screening begins at 7:30pm sharp. Seating is first come first serve, in which case it's better to be early!
