An exhibition by Palestinian artist, Kamal Boullata.
After spending over two decades exploring the reaches of geometric abstraction, Palestinian painter and writer Kamal Boullata returns to the Word as a subject matter in his art. The brushwork through which geometric Arabic words are resurfacing in his painting reveal perhaps more than any other component how his new painting is deeply enriched by the experience he attained during the period in which he had been absorbed with his abstract explorations.
Boullata’s most recent paintings of Arabic words present us with a new investigation that concentrates on the interrelationship between light, color and geometry. They are very different from his 1970s and 1980s works in which angular Arabic words were central to his art. Inspired by the rigorous studies of the great Basra-born mathematician, physicist, geometer, calligrapher and humanist al-Hasan Ibn al-Haitham (called Alhazen by Middle Ages and Renaissance Latin writers), the series of paintings in this exhibition were created as homage to this leading Arab pioneer.
The opening reception will be held on December 9th, 7:30pm onwards.
